The common understanding of alcoholism and addiction in secular recovery is that they are incurable diseases for which there is no cure. The only way to sobriety from a secular program viewpoint is a lifelong day to day maintenance of sobriety - if the program is stopped sobriety will end and the very real prospect of death then looms. But is this indeed true? Does it agree with what the Bible teaches concerning alcoholism and addiction?
The Bible clearly identifies alcoholism (drunkenness) and drug addiction (sorcery - from the Greek Pharmakeia) as sin. So, from a Christian viewpoint the question must be asked, "If alcoholism and addiction are sin, how could they be disease?" Also, "How does the disease concept affect the gospel message?"
